Aging motors

I need to know if there is a sight that i can use to look up the year of my motors by model number or serial numbers?Also i have a 97 mariner 20 hp short shaft and am wondering if it is possible to make if a long shaft.I have it on a 14 ft. Blue Fin.A friend told me to cut 6 inches off the back of the boat but i would rather not do that.Any help would be greately appreciated.Im new to this site but i love reading all the posts.Thanks Don
