Well, in an effort to reduce how much we lazily sit and get fatter in front of the TV my wife canceled our DirecTV service. I imagine I'm going to be posting ten times a day & reading & finishing a bunch of home projects. Well, I doubt I'll finish any but I'm nervously interested what it'l be like.

Any of you guys quit TV cold turkey? Also, for those of you that still have TV, can I come over and watch something?

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

And the Daytona 500 is just around the corner! As a kid, I remember our picture tube went out on the old black and white. Took awhile for dad to replace it(we finally went to color). In the meantime, we were building models, etc, at the kitchen table on a nightly basis. The men anyway. Then dad replaced the tv and the model building went away. I remember him saying how he regretted replacing it. I guess there is somthing to be said about wasting hours watching tv...... Now the wife accuses me of wasting hours on forums..

Invade her domain and drive her nuts. She'll either adapt or get that tv back on in a hurry. For example, if her domain is the kitchen, start taking up lots of room in the kitchen with projects and make a constant mess. Better yet, if she likes to cook and you never help, all of a sudden, start doing all the cooking and do a really bad job of it. If she has a room to herself like a craft room, move your new model building enterprise in there and make a mess. You'll have tv back in a jiffy along with more channels than you ever knew existed.

That's a good start, but you will most likely have to go a bit further. Might I suggest...

- use her turkey baster for some engine oil
- Bake a car part in the oven, nice oily one so it not only stinks up the house, but flavors the oven
- That part is going to be hot coming out of the over, so best to use her oven mitts or a couple dish towels
- Tupperware or cupcake pans are always needed in the garage
- the kitchen sink makes a good parts washer

Once she sees how all that extra time is being utilized, she might do something to change your ways. Either that,,, or,,, you'll be sleeping on the couch:D

Honestly, I wouldn't mind getting rid of our Dish Network.......

When the world went digital, our TV died. I haven't gone to the effort to put in the outside antenna needed to get it back.

About a week ago my 18 year old, just back from an evening at his girlfriend's house where everybody, including GF was glued to their TV, thanked me for not fixing the TV.

I durn near fell over.

Racing Season is starting, hockey playoffs are around the corner, now is NOT the time to quit cold turkey! If it weren't for sports and news, I could get along without the idiot box, but there is sports and news, so ...

We never upgraded the lake house to digital, so internet was the only way I could watch any tv.
NASCAR was easy to find, NFL was more difficult, and if you found Fox news you had to watch
out for their legal department pulling into the driveway.

Be careful there you might just be playing into her hand. She just might let you in the kitchen then expect you to do dishes, cook and gosh knows what else in there. I would avoid the kitchen like there were a plague in there:rolleyes:

You need to get a game system like X-Box or Ps3 and she'll have the TV turned back on in no time

Haven't had cable or dish for well over a decade. Have an antenna on the roof but rarely watch broadcast TV. Mostly netflix now.

If I didn't need the Sprout channel for my son, we'd have gotten rid of cable a while ago. My wife and I very very rarely watch any live TV except maybe a bit of Food Network. I can get anything else I want to watch over the internet.

Re: Ahhh.... my wife had DirecTV turned off

Those are some pretty funny responses. We're still married but I sure take my shots at her for having it turned off- of course after 10 years of marriage she doesn't listen to me anyway.

I'm afraid if I try to invade the kitchen she'll be happy about it & tell all her girlfriends that they should disconnect the TV too. As far as losing weight, we'll probably gain more since there'll be more time for cooking and experimenting with food.

A buddy at my Aikido dojo turned his TV off and said it's the best thing he's done in a long time. Hopefully this will be a good family thing, but I don't know what I'm going to do when football starts back up.
