How much effect on air flow does the baffles on each side of the motor hoods of Johnson/Evinrude XP/GT V-6's have on performance. Or are they more for looks?
Thank You, Dalew

i would say they are there for a reason, they don't spend much money if it's not necessary.

Yep....what tashasdaddy said. If you look you will see the hood is pretty much air tight so you need a way of getting fresh air into the engine so the carbs can breath. That and they do look cool....8)

Re: Air baffles on engine cover

I remember in the days of opposed 4 cyl OMC engines, one of my friends racing engine had a big flared hootus attached to the carb to improve air ingestion. It looked like the flare on a trumpet (musical instrument) but the hole was obviously large enough to fit the carb.

Also, those were the days of Merc having the chrome clamshell cover and I saw several louvered covers.....that was the days when putting louvers in the hood of your car was "the thing".

Did it help the Merc? Dunno. But anytime you can improve the breathing of an engine you are going to gain performance........hence the essence of the turbocharger.

hey mark you saw the intakes on the carbs on one of my pics with the hood off the motor right? I had big luvres on an old 85hp yamaha racing motor, that thing was loud, and it did help performance .....

That looks like the kind of flared air inlet we had, cept it was bigger.

Dee, are you one of the guys in the pic? If so, I can see why you "can" race.....young enough. d:)

Well hang in there. You're making up for the things I didn't do..................but that's ok (that I didn't do them)......like the mountain climbers who are hanging by one peg (that they just drove in vertically to the underside of a rock and they are just hanging there). Yucko.

Have fun.
