The electrostatic filter will clean pollen, smoke and other things a fiberglass filter won't.

I have a Honeywell in my forced hot air/air conditioning system. The reliability is not very good. The power supply burns out every few years.

The biggest complaints against the electic charge type air cleaners is that the dirt in the air tends to collect on all surfaces, not just in the unit where it is supposed to, and some of them make a lot of ozone leaving a funny smell and ozone rots rubber.

I think you need to check out each unit on its own.

Electrostatic is junk - don't do it. 2 main probelems #1 the statis presure drop is too high, you will overheat yout HX, or cause long term damage to your compressor #2 you'll never get it clean -- so in terms of bacteria now you have a 4H farming project.

Electronic does have exceptional performance, but not my personal choice. The perfromance is only exceptional when clean, if you don't keep after it - it stops working. Addtionally the life expectancy is 3 -5 yrs on cells & ionazation wires.

The Aprilare Hepa type 2200 / 2400 is hands down the best - low static drop, 77 sq ft of throw away media (last aprox 1 yr in most applications) no moving parts, no odor.

If you have anyone in the family w/ respiratory issues or you're looking for the best - add a UltraSteril UV system - NOTHING organic gets by it.

Also - watch you RH - if it exceeds 50% - that's where dust mites * molds thrive - invest in a Aprilair 1700 dehumidifier.
