Thanks to this forum, my Mariner outboard Serial Number: 0B144478 Model Number: 7150746 has been identified as a 1986 EXLPTO 150HP. There is no air filter on the motor, and I have been doing several searches on the internet, and have yet to come up with a source. Does anyone make an air filter for this motor? It seems like one would fit inside the plastic cover on the carbs. My last two outboards have been Evinrudes and both had filters, prior to that I had a couple of Mercruisers. Any suggestions as to where to purchase one?

wow, if ya need an airfilter on your outboard please check your depth sounder and your GPS coordinates, you may have more problems than ya think,

have never seen a modern two stroke outboard with an air filter, most times we dont see much dusty conditions at sea.
what kind of E rudes did ya have with air filters ?
but no worries your 150 just has an airbox that is also a sound dampener.

Re: Air Filter for Mariner

I realize the motor doesn't come with one stock, both of the 3 cyl 'rudes had a foam unit in the airbox that was very similar to what you see on a lawnmower. I got it from a company in Orange Co CA. Aftermarket of course. The newest Mercs have an air-filter on them made by 3M. I was looking for something similar for the older units.

You are right some early Johnsons and Evinrudes did have filters but the manufacturers found they they did not need them( not alot of dust on the water) so they got rid of them. The best coarse of action here is if it ain't broke don't re-engineer it.The air filters on the newer engines are there to stop the engine from sucking in belt debris and belt dust since Mercury's are now all running belt driven alternaters and or compressors or are 4 strokes w/belt driven cams.

Studly and T-I-M, The early sixties E-rudes had single or dual fiberglass sound absorbers mounted just inside the air intakes in the bottom of the cowling. They looked a lot like air filters.
