Putting the carb back on my 1979 Johnson Seahorse 4 h.p. model #4w79d I need to know if there is a basic setting for the air/fuel mixture screw? It is set up so you can adjust it while you are out on the water? does this need to be messed with all the time?

Suzuki40

Re: air/fuel mixture setting....

Top adjustment needle (low speed mixture screw), lightly seat (turn clockwise) then open 1 1/2 turns. Bottom adjustment needle (high speed mixture screw) lightly seat then open 3/4 turn. That should get you going. After warm up, turn idle mixture screw clockwise in 1/4 turn increments until rpms drop and it starts to stumble, then open back up slightly for smooth idle. The high speed adjustment is best done out on the water at WOT. Again, turn knob clockwise in 1/4 turn increments until rpms drop off, then back open slightly. Wait a few seconds between each 1/4 turn adjustment for motor to settle down to new settings.

Suz..Por Nada...BTW, I didn't comment on your last Q. ...no, you shouldn't have to keep adjusting the settings, unless you get bad gas(old), improper mix, water etc.

But the adjustment you told me to do requires adjusting 2 screws? I only have (1)???

Suzuki40

Re: air/fuel mixture setting....

Then you have only a low speed mixture screw, the high speed jet is fixed. Do the initial setting for the low speed needle (lighty close, then open 1 1/2 turns) warm it up and make final mixture setting for a smooth idle.
