air horn question....

I recently was gifted an air horn from an 18 wheeler....just the horn itself. I gave it a blast of shop air (140 PSI), and its GREAT.....it rattled the windows in our shop...lol...Now I need to power it on my boat...any suggestions ? I have been toying with the idea of a smaller version of the portable air tank like we have in our shop to air up tires on cars too far away from our hoses...I can always replenish the tank with my booster/inflator....I also need a valve/switch that would look nice on my boats dashboard... The horn doesn't need 140 PSI , even 100 PSI would DO IT NICELY !!! ... lolol .... any suggestions will be appreciated !
Thanks guys

Re: air horn question....

AFI makes marine air horns, plus they sell replacement compressors. I had one years ago and it worked fine. Check IBoats they probably sell them.

They sell them for vehicles. Used to have one in my truck. You should just buy one of those for the compressor.

Where will you mount it? If outside the cuddy, be sure to point the horns down so they can drain.

I have trumpet horns and had to put bra's on them to keep the water out because it couldn't drain.

I have been looking at air horns but saw where they were accumulating condensation in the compressor.

I hope your's works, I LOVE a loud horn, and it's so useful.

You don't need an airtank. You need a rotary vaned compressor. Look on eBay if you can't find it here. They run about 30-40 dollars. Simple 2 wire hookup with a 1/4" air line to the trumpet.

robbya- train horns, nice. be sure to put in a ball valve to be able to control the amount of air going into the horns. it is better that just a plain blast.

the horn in question is about 30" long...it will be mounted on the top of the cuddy. I don't anticipate it being a problem there as my cuddy top slopes down and the horn was designed for a truck .....I will look into the rotary vane pump for sure !

I don't know if that vane pump will supply a high enough constant pressure, you may need an air tank. As far as rain or spray goes, it won't hurt it. Most horns are mounted under the cab on the newer aero-cab trucks and on the roof of the older stylish trucks. You can get a clip on bell cover at just about any truckstop or chrome shop. I have 3 pull valves in my tool box. You can hook up an electric solenoid and push button as well.

That rotary vane pump has supplied two sets of dual trumpet horns for years and sounds great. You would be amazed at the air flow that come from them. This patented idea came from people a whole lot smarter than us and they have been in business for years.

Re: air horn question....

A friend of a friends was visiting when I came over one day.he had stuck a double horn genuine locomotive trumpets underneath the toolbox in the back of a lifted F250, they were huge! he said while rigging the compressor to it on his kitchen table he tested it and it blew out or cracked his kitchen windows!!he said he liked to come up behind people slowing to or crossing the tracks and give it a toot!!!my buddy insisted he demonstrate it for me and after a short burst,(I think I might have jumped a little) about 10 of his neighbors (condos) up and down the street came outside to see what the heck made that racket,we just stood there like we didnt hear it!!! I think it would be cool to hide one on a Mini Cooper,or a Miata or similar small car.or a 14' jonboat!!
