Usually "natural", some vented, foam bad idea. Foam would eventually get waterlogged and then your in trouble.

Re: air in pontoons?

My 2000 Voyager has foam in them that came from the factory that way, and thank heavens they are. I was out with the family 3 years ago and we were about a half mile from shore when we hit a submerged tree in 17' of water and it punched a hole about the size of a basketball in my center pontoon and tore it open with a gash about 6' long. It happened at the end of the day as the sun was setting and we were on a remote part of the lake all by ourselves fishing on a Sunday evening, to boot. I had all 4 of my kids on board and it was our youngest daughters first time out and she was 4 months old at the time. We made it back to the the ramp with no issues, and that is when we found out how bad the damage actually was. The final cost of damages was 13k, so the $100 I pay a year for insurance is well worth it, and I don't gripe about stirring that check anymore. Now, I will not buy a pontoon without the 'toons being filled because I shutter every time I think about "what could have happened!"

There are all kinds of different arrangements. Pressurized with a few lbs of air is a good idea as it helps prevents dents. Many have foam in them too.
