I have a 1969 65 hp mercury ob and was told by a mechanic that air was getting through the air intake and that the gasket needed to be replaced.

Was he referring to the carburetor?
not sure what my next move is...

Do you have a 3 or 4 cyl? Those carbs are pretty straight forward. Not sure what he means. Next move should be to ask him to explain himself.

The engine will stall when I put her in gear and try to throttle up...
so I will prob be replacing the transfer port gasket?

Just want to be sure I am replacing the right thing.
Should I replace both since I am taking it apart?
I built the outboard stand and have managed to take the motor off the boat and onto the stand...
I got the outboard plans from the IBOATforums. Great help there!

Kinda tough to help you out... I'd ask your mechanic - he's seeing & hearing what's going on... and ask him to explain himself - but if you moving on - get the kit - won't cost much... and for the trouble you've been going through it'll be worth it.
Good luck

I am not sure how to check the compression. I am sure there is a gauge I need which I do not own yet...
It sounded great on the muffs but when I put it in the water and gave it all the throttle in forward it would sputter out.

The mechanic isn't from around here. All this happened on vacation
