Air Silencer Gaskets?

Question. What is the purpose of the gaskets on the Air Silencer, the one that connects the silencer to the Carbs. and the one that connects the cover to the silencer.

The reason I ask, is my motor did not have them on there when I bought it. 1977 70 HP Johnson.

Do they serve a purpose, will they change anything on the engine's running having them installed now?

99% of all motors that have had the cover removed run with out those gaskets.

The gasket is really just there to hold in any fuel that leaks out the front of the carbs so it can be 'recycled" via a tube into the crankcase. If you don't mind a small amount of fuel possibly leaking out into the motor cowling area, it's no biggie.
