I have an Alapha 1 genII losing fluid, but there is no sign of water in the fluid. After a full day of boating it lost 1/4" from the resivor 2 days in a row. We pulled it out of the water took a fluid sample from the drain, no water, pulled the prop and the output seal looks good no fishing line in it and no sign of drive fluid. We let it sit all day with drive down and a piece of cardboard under it and no sign of fluid loss. The engine bay has no sign of drive fluid. Does anybody have a clue where to look next?

Re: Alapha 1 genII losing fluid?

First of all my condolences for having a gen II.
We have had several this year that seem to be loosing fluid with no signs of where.

One possibility is the drive was not tucked under when filled, leaving a small air pocket in the tail of the bullet. Fluid is just replacing the air pocket.

other than that, I'm clueless too. I spent 2 hours on a crownline today looking for just that thing. No signs of a leak anywhere and the drive held pressure.

I have a special bald spot on my head from rubbing in question over gen IIs.
Should be renamed "Mystery Drive".

One would think that a 2nd gen of anything would be better then the first.

Pull the drive, drain the oil and pressure test it with about 15 psi of air. Then spray some soapy water all over it. Two of the most common places for leaks is the shift shaft bushing in the lower (depending on the year of your drive, there is a newer style out.) and the carrier under the water pump. If that carrier leaks, you can usually hear it.
Both pieces are plastic. DO NOT replace with aftermarket parts. They leak worse than the old ones.
