i screwed up and i need someone to tell me how bad this is going to be....
I either reversed the battery leads
om more likely put the ground lead to the wrong terrminal this morning in preperation to run it on the ear muffs after winter storage.... i tested for power at the power trim
and went up/down so i put the key back to off and went to lay out th hose..
So three momentents later an alarm
sounds and i find smoke at the battery, i quickly disconect and discover my error

Well now im ready for the muffs ....
same alarm sounds at turn of key and stays on
Where do i start,is there some kind of reset
I should mention that the system self check oil/temp etc..cycles fine and the horn and pump switch operate
and the engine did crank but i did not attempt to start for fear of damage.
Any help on this one

Plugger...you need to post the year and hp of your engine. More than likely, you've blown the rectifier or rect/regulator and possibly done damage to the stator. But we need to know the year and hp first so we know what's what.

In thinking about i did not even turn the key to on/run, because the trim/tilt operates with out the key .

Plugger...don't make any difference if you turned the key on or not. What you did was reverse the poarity across the diodes in the rectifier/regulator. Basically making the "ground" hot and the "hot" ground.

I have no idea what the "thin pink wire" is. Part of the boat wiring I would imagine. I would be taking a good look at the wireing on the engine to see if any was burnt. Look at the starter solenoid where the battery cable connects to. There should be a ring terminal there with a red wire going to the rect/reg. Check it to see if it got hot. Look up under the flywheel to see if there is any "goo" laying around there. If there is, you probably fried the stator. The goo is the stuff that the coils are coated in.

Your not the only one.
I did the same thing last summer and i did not get any problem after that i guess...knock on wood..
But i look at my volt meter last time i was on the lake and it did look like it charge the batterys (got two) high..about 16-17 volt and then it did get back and charge it normaly to about 14V.
Dont know if it had anything to do with my fault or if its because i got really good charged battery after the winter.
But i got a problem with my engine, it wont run smooth when it hits 4800 rpm (start to stutter like it needs more fuel). at 4500 rpm it runs perfect.
Dont know if the rpm thing can have anything with the battery wrong connections fault to do.
Maybe someone else know?..

Johnson 175 faststrike -92

Daniel,

I would suggest that you open another topic regarding your own engine problem. People may not notice it buried in another thread.

Plugger.
If your alarm stays on at key on,disconnect the oil tank electrical connector, you probably fried the circuitry in the oil tank this circuit is what gives the short beep at key on to tell you the horn is working . had same prob. years ago
good luck

thank you all ....im hope'n for that oil
tank thingy...
would the engine even crank if i fried
the stator and rectifier and are these parts something you simply replace....
(plug in?)

im just sick over it
STUPID..STUPID STUPID

Don't be beatin' up on yerself yet plugger. The engine will still crank. May even start. Check the spark before trying to fire the engine off. Each cylinder should have a hot white strong spark across a 1/2" gap. Check the wiring out before any cranking is done.

May be a good time to think about getting a service manual.
