my alarm is going off on my 1995 50 hp merc. It isa oil injected. The alarm does not sound all the time but is somewhat intermittent. lately it has sounded more than it hasn't. how do i tell if it is a cooling problem or oil problem. The engine pees and the water feels luke warm and the thermostat is removved. If it is oil, how do i check to see if it is pumping?

An oil warning will be a "beep, beep, beep"<br />An overheat warning will be a constant "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep".

Well that just ruled out half of it. Any advice on how to check if it is overheating or could I have a bad sensor?

I had the same problem with my 1994 50 hp. It turned out to be a bad sensor.

I've looked at a schematic of a 95 50hp... It doesn't show an overheat sensor but does show a temperature sender.... Your motor most likely has one or the other... In any case, it is located near the top spark plug... with one wire going to it... Held in place with a retainer plate and two bolts...

Also, when are you getting the alarm,,,,<br /><br />Is it mostly at WOT (high rpms), or idle, or all the time....<br />You could actually have an overheat problem... Have you replaced or checked the impeller recently?

If it's all the time, especially right after start-up when the engine is diffinitely still cool, You most likely have a falty temperature switch.... Check the lead going from the sensor to the terminal block... Look for the insulation on the wire worn. If that lead is worn and grounds itself to the block, it will trip the alarm... <br /><br />First disconnect the lead from the terminal block and see if the alarm goes away.. If it does, you will know that the temperature switch is at fault...

I'm still on the warning buzzer. I just picked up the clymer manual for the engine. It shows a warning module. # 15. It seems as though when I move the wire going to the module The buzzer will stop. I guess I need to get in behind there and see if there is a loose conection or frayed wire going to the module. It doesn't look like it will be an easy thing to get to but I wanted to be sure I got the manual before I started
