I am having an issue with the buzzing noise in the control unit on a Riveria Pontoon with a 70 Johnson. Someone told me it was a warning indication that the oil was low, but I have added more oil and it still buzzes. The first time it happened the motor was running fine in open water and it just cut off. When I went to restart it, it started but the alarm noise started also and it ran until I could get back in. Now if buzzes everytime it is started, even with more oil. Anyone else have any ideas what would cause the alarm?

Re: Alarm noise with Johnson 70 motor

I just went through the exact same thing with my 95 Skeeter w/ a 94 200hp Vindicator. :) What year is yours?

I can give you some suggestions, and see where they take you. I've talked to just about every tech in my Tri-State area along with Evinrude, and the Outboard Wizard himself. :)

1st... a constant tone indicates overheating or a fuel restriction. At least on my model. Low oil is a chirp every 40 seconds, and no oil is a siren like a high and low tone alternation. If you just 'cut out' it could be a fuel flow restriction.

2nd... make sure there aren't any crimped oil or fuel hoses. Squeeze both oil and fuel bulbs.

3rd ... make sure you have good water pressure coming from the tell-tale while it is hooked up to the hose. You should be able to run the engine for 5 minutes or more, and the water still be cool to luke warm to the touch.

4th.... start unhooking sensors starting with your temperature sensor switch. Then go to your oil reservoir switch ... etc ...

5th.... check your in line fuel filter.

Man I could go on and on. I have a whole list of things you can check. Mine ended up being a short that caused the warning horn switch to open. The part that caused this ....... my aerator switch. :D It was pulling too much power on the constant hot wire, and this triggered a warning with my system.

If you need some more help ... let me know.

what year model, taylor?

any other symptoms?

what maintenance have you completed or had done recently?

I guess that since you "added oil" we can safely assume the VRO is still connected.

If it's an overtemp alarm you're getting, it means "this engine is about to self-destruct" - best policy is to shut 'er down like right now.

The year model is 1989. The alarm noise sounds like it it fading in and out, not a constant sound.

Also, it will sound when it is first started, not necessarily when it has been running. I tried last week after it not being started for two weeks prior and the alarm sounds within seconds of the motor running. Very little maintenance done in last year, put gas and oil in it and it runs.

check your vro. they do go bad after a while. unnplug the vro plug and see if that fixes the problem. make sure you add some oil to the gas not to run it lean. then check your temperature sendors by unpluggin one at a time and stoipping the engine disconnect the power to the engine then re connect and start it again. untill u locate the sensor that is faulty. good luck
