I have an alarm sounding on my 1992 60 hp 3cylinder. It about one second on, one second off around idle and the frequency increases with engine speed. I unplugged the temp sensor on the top cylinder and the alarm continued, so I came to the conclusion that it's an oil alarm. I pre-mixed and ran around with it a little bit. Some times it will start sounding right after start up, sometimes it takes longer. One time I ran it for 10 minutes and it didn't go off at all. I'm not sure where to go with this from here, VRO, oil pump? I’d like to be able to take care of this one on my own. This time of year I’ve got no shot of getting into one of my local shops for repair. They’re all up to their elbows in winterizations.

If the horn beeps every 20 seconds, the tank is low on oil. If it is a constant horn, it is an overheat. I think you are correct that this is a warning horn that relates to the oiling system on the engine. Make sure the oil line from the tank to the pump is functioning. You may want to rebleed that line to make sure it is operating properly. Esp check the plastic sight tube under the cowl to be sure it has oil in it. Make sure the bulb is ok, and that you have no air leaks/cracks on the hose. You are smart to mix the oil in the gas till you can get it corrected.

Rapid short tones indicates a 'no oil ' alarm from the vro.Since you have premix currently in the fuel tank try repriming the oil line up to the pump inlet.Disconnect the oil inlet hose nearest the vro pump and route the disconnected end into a container.Gently squeeze the oil primer bulb until a solid air free stream of oil exits. Then reconnect and water test.If alarm still sounds ,the vro pump is either in need of service or replacement, or the alarm circuit itself may be triggering ghost signals.Try disconnecting the vro harness at its amphenol connector on the port side of the engine compartment when alarm sounds and see if it silences the alarm. If not, reconnect and determine whether the oil reservoir level drops during the run test by marking a line at the current oil level and see if it drops in ratio to the spent fuel mix. You'll need to expend a few gallons of fuel to verify whether oil usage from reservoir can be detected.

Sometimes these vro alarms can be traced to a faulty oil reservoir sensor. You can test that by insuring that the reservoir is topped off and disconnecting the wires from the reservoir and see if it silences the rapid tone alarm.Normally the reservoir sensor would trigger the every 40 sec alarm tone but at times a failing sensor can produce ghost alarms.
