I have a 1994 Evenrude 140 v4 w/v6 lower unit, when I first turn the ignition to the on position there is an audible whistle for a second. Yesterday, the whistle kept occurring every few seconds while I was cruising at speed (4700-5000RPM), what is causing this alarm whistle to do this?

Re: alarm (whistle sound)

Your alarm should make the following tones: 1 short beep when key first turned on = alarm sef-test, a constant beep = overheat, 1/2 second beep every 40 seconds = low oil in the oil reservoir, rapid beeping 1/2 second on 1/2 second off = no oil delivery at oil pump.

-John

Thanks much!!! It does it about every 40 seconds, thanks. I bought this boat with engine last spring and use it every chance I can, so far great motor. I'll add more oil, where do I get Ram oil? Or do you have other reccomendations? :)

Re: alarm (whistle sound)

If you have a remote oil tank, this tank feeds to a smaller tank on the engine, check the cap on the smaller tank. What happens there is a float on this cap and when the oil is two low the alarm sounds. With engine off, unscrew cap, turn ingnition to the on position and see if alarm sounds when you move the float up or down. This tank holds enough oil to run the engine for about 30 minutes without doing any damage. The cap may have a crack in it, if it does this allows air into the system and it will not fill up with oil to the full mark. Do not remove cap with engine running - you will have oil all over the place. At least this is the way a Merc 200 OB works.

Are you sure he didn't mean that you should check your oil injection (2 stroke) reservoir???? (ie not the tilt/trim ram reservoir)

Is it an oil injection model? I imagine it is considering its age..

rgds

Frank

Fourplay - Evinrudes and Johnsons don't use a remote oil tank and reservoir on the engine like your Merc does.

Franki- I think neptunes reference to Ram oil is about Ficht Ram Oil, a semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil available from any Evinrude dealer.

-John

One more thing neptune202.
If you didn't know what the alarm was all about, you should seriously consider buying a manual for that engine before you turn it into a coffee table.

c/6

Hooty
