Alarm / Won't shut off

New to this forum.I bought a Forester 157 Phantom boat and this was the engine on it > 1988 Evinrude 88 SPL. Starts, water flowings good from all places,sounds good, But ran it for about 10-15 minutes with muffs on then shut it down for a quick moment then tryed to restart it and then a constant alarm from the control box where the shifts are started and won't stop now.... [Frown] IT did seem to be low on fuel in tank could that be the problem ? Haven't refilled tank yet need to know the mixture first. Any suggestions? That I should know about this engine good or bad.Any help would be greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Bigz

That's the overheat alarm Bigz....tells you when the engine is overheating. Although you may be getting water, it may not be enough to cool the engine or the t-stats need replaced.<br /><br />If the engine is new to you, replace the water pump and the t-stats. To check the engine temp, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.....Look on top just in front of the heads. There are flat places there. If you cannot touch these flats with your fingers for a few seconds, the engine is overheating....you'll know. Remember that each head has it's own t-stat and overheat sensor...look for a single wire coming from each head....thats' the sensor lead.<br /><br />Post back what you find.<br /><br />EDIT: Fuel mix is 50:1....16oz oil for 6 gallons of gas.

Constant alarm is the overheat warning. I'd put a new waterpump in it before running it again. Should always do this when buying a used motor. <br />And make sure you have enough water coming out of the hose when you use muffs.

Been busy finally able to get back on...Yes everything seems to be ok.Have boat in water now and runs fine ..Thanks guys for your replys and help. Picked up a repair manual after market one its the Seloc Johnson/Evinrude Outboards 1973-1991 hope this is a good manual ?<br /><br /> Thanks Again !!!<br /> Bigz
