I am considering buying a 1984 27' Albin aft cabin trawler. It has a Ford Lehman 4 cyl diesel and appears to be in good condition. Can anyone provide me with any information on the Albin boats as to overall quality, handling or problems that maybe associated to their make etc.
Thanks
Sauly

Sauly - I'm only posting to this as you have not received any input yet. I have never been on one of these let alone owned one. I do remember reading a bit though. They were reported to be very much a value boat with little or no frills. Construction quality was reported to be adequate but modest (in other words not as bad as a ########). A couple of the owners indicated that they were satisfied with what they got and recognized the limitations.

A friend of mine has that exact boat (1987). He bought it about eight years ago, and really likes it.

It has weathered well and requires little maintenance. It it very economical and but also VERY slow. He boasts that he goes an entire season on one tank of diesel fuel. On the other hand, top speed is about 7 or 8 knots. Way too slow for me. But, he really loves it!

Believe it or not they had one at last year's boat show in Houston. I fell in love with it. It is a no frills boat, but has all the right stuff. Great for fishin the big ones.

It would be ideal for offshore or lakes like Ontario or Michigan.

Have a few friends with them,1 loves it the other hates it.Both said the water does not drain off the decks and walkaround well and it puddles and leaks through to the cabin.Very good economy and very slow and very heavy.tough to dock in the wind. They can take the chop very very well.Charlie

I have been happy with my '85 Albin 27' aft cabin. As noted they are not luxury boats, The gel coats are notorious amoung f/g repair people, and the cabin sole tends to delaminate from the balsa core. The Lehman 4cyl (my manuel says 53 hp) is based on the Puegot 2 liter block so some parts are available. Parts like the starters are not off the shelf and are impossible to find. Yes they are slow.
