What is up with Alby down in Australia? Why has he fallen out of favor with you guys?? I am a long time admirer of his adventures. From the first time I saw him on TV I was riveted. What a life!! So whats up with him these days?? I would really like to know more about achris' statement regarding him, as he is one of my hero's.

Now check this out, I think I saw him yesterday on Pensacola Beach with a woman and they were riding bikes. I didn't stop to ask if it was him, I thought that would be rude, but now I am thinking I might head down to the beach and see if I can spot that person again just so I can ask. I think it was him and anyone who has seen Alby knows that he is a very striking individual, and it would be hard to mistake him; my wife even thought it was him. Man I would love to meet this guy. Who just up and leaves home to travel into the most remote parts of the world, spends their life exploring this beautiful planet, and manages to make a living at it??

So Achris, what have you heard about him?? BTW Chris, I might be buying a Toyota from New Zealand this week. pretty neat huh?

Re: Alby Mangels

I loved his adventures, 'World Safari' & 'Adventure Bound' series were great. I don't know what or where he is now but he's not that popular these days. He did some silly things that got people hurt, maybe his views on conservation were to liberal 20 years ago - dunno. He certainly upset a few goverments with his adventures.

He always had a beautiful girl on his arm, which I envied as a teenager! Judy Green grrrrrrrr......

Aldo

There's plenty of Websites dedicated to this person. What they don't tell you about is the scams he was running. Most of the people on the sets were never paid and many people lost a lot of money. Most of the 'stunts' were staged and he was very rarely in any more danger than his creditors chasing him. Some of the 'beautiful girls' tried to sue him for the money they were to get for appearing 'on his arm' but because of the way he'd set things up the money was unobtainable.

Kiwi, I am trying to buy a 1962 Land Cruiser pick up truck with a shortened flat bed from New Zealand, (God's Other Own?). We can import cars to America that are 25 years old or older without restriction. The little truck is neat with a chevy 327 and 400 turbo trans, and right hand drive, but it is very basic with no radio, no air conditioning, no power steering. Next year I hope to bring some Toyota BJ 55 LP 2BL Land Cruisers up from your little slice of heaven.

Cheers brother,
Wes

Re: Alby Mangels

AChris,

I remember the episode where he found a twin engine (pusher/puller)airplane in God Own that was sold to a gentlemen in Australia and pulled it out of a barn to get it ready to fly. It was pretty obvious that plane had been made to appear dirty and unserviceable, and no one would risk the inherent dangers of flying an un-airworthy plane over mountains. I figured it was just showmanship, which sells. It is sad that he was not honest with people, I hate that. Honesty is a virtue that I hold in high regard because any little boy can tel lies, it takes a man to be honest....especially when the truth sucks.

What I love about him was the fact he did what I have dreamed about doing all my life. He went into the amazon rain forest in the 70's and filmed a tribe of natives, then he went back 20 years later and found them and they were changed. When he first filmed them they were living as they had for hundreds of years, but when he went back they had lost some of their customs and were being modernized by intrusion from the outside world.

He sailed across oceans and saw the most amazing things, like the reef of the coast of Brazil. I have been reading Cruising World and Sail magazines for 8 years, yet I have never even set foot on a sail boat....and I live on the coast! He lived the dreams that I have dreamed, I don't have the guts to do that. Remember when his Toyota broke down in Africa and he had to walk back to town to get parts for it? And there were lions and elephants around? WOW!! But mostly it was his sailing adventures that I love. I would actually pay him for the opportunity to crew on his boat and carry heavy camera gear, just to have the opportunity to go on an adventure just one time in my life. I figure Alby is prolly too old for all that now.

Cheers brother,
wes

Sorry the shatter your dreams, but the vast majority of that was faked.

... but when he went back they had lost some of their customs and were being modernized by intrusion from the outside world.
I wonder who was the first intrusion from the outside world that changed them so much? One of the laws of uncertainty is that the closer we observe something the more we change it.
