Unless you have a really decent stand it's really best to have a helper. Drive should be in forward, then rotate the prop/output shaft slightly. You have to make sure you align the copper water tube and the shift shaft properly. Rotate the drive shaft slightly as the upper seats onto the lower. Don't let it drop the whole way down. You have to install the two forward lock nuts 1/4" before the surfaces mate to start the nuts onto the stud.

[h=2]Re: Alpha One Gen 1 Lower Shift Issues after water pump replacement[/h]
The way its gone is:IF DROPPING THE JUST THE LOWER
lube the impeller, grease the shaft, turn splined shaft fully clockwise untill prop is locked CCW. install lower by lining up the water guide tube and turning the prop CCW about an inch to line the splines of the driveshaft. You`ll feel it engage, START THE FRONT NUT WITH 2 TURNS to hold the unit in place.
move brass lower shoe so that it goes on to the lower splined shaft and is facing in a straight line
install the 2 side nuts MAKING SURE THE LOWER SPLINED SHAFT MOVES UP AN DOWN .
tighten the side nuts , the bottom nuts the front nut and the allen under the zinc

Best way is to put the lower in a stand and install the upper unit on the lower.
Turn splined shaft fully CW untill prop locks CCW
lower upper unit and make sure the copper tube enters the giude
turn lower brass shoe to engage the splined shaft and is in a straight line.
turn input shaft slightly to mate the driveshaft , you`ll feel it drop into place
You may have to split the unit slightly with a screwdriver(raise it up ) to start the 2 side nuts untill tight
install remaining nuts and hardware
Dont forget the small O ring between the units

thank you, tried with the upper unit on. Put the lower shift shaft into forward, locked the prop counter clockwise
slide the lower unit up turned the prop, the lower easily slide up after the upper shift shaft lined up, then I put the two
side nuts and the back on tightened it up climbed in to check if the shifter put it into neutral, it did but now it won't go into
reverse only forward. What the lol so I took the lower unit off checked if there is reverse on the lower and there is any idea why It won't
go into reverse now thank you.

If your looking down at the shift shaft shoe with the end of the propshaft facing you FWD is in a straight line, neutral is to the left about 1/2 way and reverse is TO THE LEFT all the way

sorry Bt my leg only has a splined shift shaft I was told its a early model alfa one.
I turned the splined shift shaft clockwise and locked the prop counter clockwise with a
bungy cord and the lower goes on smooth. but when I shift from forward to reverse its is not locking
into reverse.

I finally figured it out. I might have taken the lower off ten times. so I took the upper off and everything looked good
the shift cable didn't have any play in it, so I looked at the shift shaft in the upper I found the problem in a second,
the link between the lower has a slot that the shift shaft from the lower slides into anyways the slot was bent and there was
a lot of play in the slot so I used pliers and tightened the slot. That took all the play away and it shifts into reverse now.
just a tiny bit of play did not allow enough turn to shift it.

If the lower shoe was bent sideways ,you did not install the lower shift shoe correctly or it was not lined up correctly to accept the upper shoe.

If you develop a shifting problem this may have also been bent during the install

yeah the it was not bent that sever but none the less there was enough play that it would not go into reverse.
Thanks BT.

I hope I am not hijacking this OP, but what did I do wrong if my shift shoe looks like the one pictured. Mine won't go into forward with out the engine dying except once out of ten times.

If you only dropped the lower and when installing it ,you did not connect the lower shoe to the splined shaft correctly and tried to force the drive together.
Read post 3, you start by putting the splined shaft fully CW and prop CCW till locked, this is FWD, raise the unit up ,turn the prop CCW less than an inch to line up the driveshaft, start the front nut with 2 threads.
line up the lower shaft so that it slides onto the splined shaft, once lined up it will be below the upper shoe, start the 2 side nuts and tighten WHILE MOVING THE LOWER SHOE UP AND DOWN TO ENSURE IT SLIDES AND MATES WITH THE UPPER SHOE WITHOUT FORCE

Well I bet this is what I've done. So can I just take it back apart and do it right or is damage done because I have ran it already?
