does anyone have any tips on removing an alignment dowel?

went to install a replacement lower unit and a dowel was in the "wrong side" of the joint! basically had a dowel in the midsection and one in the lower unit trying to occupy the same space!

tried a bernzamatic and visegrips and couldn't remove one.

And it's a plastic one? you could loosen or remove the bell housing, and it might fall out. Of course, you might lose your aligment, but...
Just a sugjestion.
If thart didn't werk, it may be time for a Slide-ram dent puller, carefully threaded onto the end of it.
Good luck.

Use side cutters and grip it as close to the case as you can and lever it up and out.
