when aligning my motor, is it necessary to lift the motor in order to raise the front mounts or can i still raise the mounts with the weight of the motor on them??

If i need to raise it, how would i go about doing so...

Re: Alignment question

The first thing you have to do is CHECK it and see which way it has to go.
The front mounts are like screw jacks. You can raise or lower the engine by turning the bottom nut on the mount.

yes sir thats what i figured. lets just say that i have to raise the front mounts can i just turn the nut with the weight of the motor on it, i read somewhere that i need to lift the weight of the motor off the nut first....

is this true?

Re: Alignment question

Sure, that's how they work. You adjust them up and down while trying to keep equal pressure on boat mounts. It's a feel thing about how much pressure it takes to turn the nuts.
After you get it where you want it, tighten the upper lock nuts and make sure things don't change.
One other question, WHY is your's out of alignment? Did the motor mount nuts come loose, rear mounts fail, what? They really don't just go out of alignment for no reason.

Re: Alignment question

i honestly havent checked the alignment yet, but when i pulled the drive it took a little prying to get loose, also one stringer is slightly rotting which leads me to believe that the engine may have sagged...

although looking down the gimbal bearing the the splines seemed to be nicely lined up... so i may not have top align anything..

but just in case i do. i want to make sure i dont need an engine hoist.

I do this for a living, and I can't eball the alignment, I doubt you can.
If a stringer is rotten, things will sag.
