Alignment tool max depth

What is the maximum depth a Mercruiser alignment tool should enter the coupler/bearing etc. 5.7 l. 1994 Alpha 1. Shoud the aliignment tool bottom out on the 2.200 and 2.750 ridges? If so only the gimbal bearing should be in the 3.750 side. Did I get it right...?

Ayuh,... The Last step/ shoulder on My bar slides in, 'n seats against the gimbel bearing race...
