alignment ? ? ?

Hi ...

1987 4.3 L omc cobra

I can get the alignment tool about 1 - 1 1/2 " freely into the coupler, after that it binds ....

maybe I'm overthinking this but ....... if the tool show's splines in the grease, all the way around, but the bottom of the tool is quite a bit more contact
deeper imprints of the splines in the grease ...

should I move the mounts up or down ?
