iv'e been hearing some talk about getting rid of the 2 stroke motors cuz of all (i guess) the emiisions(oil mixture) so if so when or how long will it take them to pass somthing like that , this is way i'm leaning toward a 4 stroke any input .

Re: all 2 stroke o/boards

It will more than likely be a state-by-state, lake-by-lake thing, and any state ban won't likely be retroactive to old engines. Just a guess on my part. The only bans I've heard of are of carb'ed two-strokes on a couple of lakes.

Tav,
Big Al set these wheels in motion during the first Clinton term.
His goal was to kill them off by 2007.

Use the search feature and read how much this is debated. There is no reason for the 2 stroke in general to be outlawed. Current Orbital technology (TLDI, Opti), and E-Tec systems are producing low emissions.

Now carb'd 2 strokes are another matter...

Re: all 2 stroke o/boards

The emissions that they are trying to control are not residual 2 cycle oil. The EPA and CARB are trying to cut the unburned gasoline (hydrocarbon) that is emitted. That is why the 2 cycle Direct Injection (DI) outboards are able to pass the emissions test. The DI motors inject gasoline into the combustion chamber after the exhaust port has closed, and the combustion is sufficient to burn nearly all of the gasoline, reducing the HC emission. Exhaust gases are swept out of the combustion chamber by fresh air only.

In a 2 cycle carb engine, the fresh fuel mix is required to sweep out the exhaust. Inevitably some unburned fuel escapes with the exhaust, causing the high HC.

Re: all 2 stroke o/boards

On the DI outboards, air is sucked into the crankcase, thru the throttle bodies and reed valves. Depending on the brand of the motor, oil is either mixed with the air or directly injected into the crankcase. The transfer ports allow the air to sweep around the piston and blow the exhaust out of the exhaust port. After the exhaust port and tansfer ports are closed, the gasoline is injected and ignited.

I understood that they are already banned in California and Nevada. I stay away from there, so it doesn't bother me.

When they ban the 2 strokes, I'll just buy out all the super cheap V6 Johnnyrudes. Don't have to have 4 stroke, just have to have a faster motor than the 4 stroke on the Ranger's boat.;):D

Haven't heard of that sort of thing up here in the Great White North...

We do however, have a few Northern lakes that are gas motor banned. And some won't allow ANY motor including electric....

But there are plenty of good casting holes that still allow fuel runners and are still stocked so I say enjoy and stay informed...

On certain waters, such as Lake Tahoe, 2-strokes are not banned but only motors that do not meet the CARB 2001 emissions specs. Most carbureted and EFI 2-strokes, as well as some carbureted 4-strokes do not meet the emission requirements.

Most EFI 4-strokes and DFI 2-strokes are the only motors you will see on the larger boats. The local marine patrol on Lake Tahoe uses Evinrude 2-stroke E-TEC (DFI) motors.

Re: all 2 stroke o/boards

I thought this would fit into this post so do newer 2 stroke(not oil injected) smoke as much as my older models? I have a buddy that says his 97 mercury doesn't smoke at all. I figured all 2 stroke pre-mix motors would smoke because of the unburnt fuels.

Re: all 2 stroke o/boards

The smoke of a 2 cycle OB is caused by the burning of the oil mixed with the gasoline. Most motors after 1964 or so, use a 50::1 mix, whether they are premix or oil injection(not Direct injection). Since fuel efficiency has gone up a bit (not a lot) since 1964 in these Carb or EFI motors, but the gas-oil mix has stayed the same, the total fuel use and therefore the smoke has diminished a bit, but not a lot.

The direct injection motors do not mix oil with gasoline, and have more sophisticated lubrication systems. They can therefore smoke a lot less than carb or EFI 2 cycle motors. They are also more fuel efficient than carb or EFI motors.
