Hi Guys,

It has been a while since I posted but i have a delima..
I installed a new (used) whiring harnes on my 1966 40 hp elce shift
evinrude outboard. It has the old rectangular plug and a
silver box with the solenoid and a voltage regulator in it..
The problem is that it all hooked up perfect except I seem to have
1 extra wire with no where to plug it into. The funny thing is that
this wire only has power with the key on and the reverse button pressed
in the on position....neither wire going to the lower unit has power....
not sure if this is not correct wiring harness...seemed to be the plug
fit...it has the two wires for the kill engine and 1 wire to the temp sensor,
and 1 pos and 1 neg cable and a black wire with plug and red wire with plug.
there is one free plug on the engine (black coming from he magneto.) and it will fit the red or the black plug but the black plugs is gounded when the key
is off. I tried to look at the old harness but it had been cut and spliced so many times that I could not follow what went to what...
any help will be appreciated...

Re: All Plugged Up

I can't make sense out of your explanation, but here is a bit of a warning: Make sure you aren't trying to use a hydro-electric push button control. The hydro-electric push button looks the same but is electrically different than the 40hp push button switch. Using the wrong one can cause severe lower unit damage.

Re: All Plugged Up

Sorry for the confusion... the boat worked and shifted fine until i tried to
replace the wiring harness from the voltage regulator back to the the motor.
and I have 1 wire with nothing to hook it to. i gave away my shop mannuel for
this year motor with another 40hp I sold to a friend....
i guess i need the wiring diagram for the "motor end' of the wiring harness..
any help will be appreciated......
