I have a 1965-66 500 series 50 hp merc motor. I replaced all fuel lines and cleaned carbs. They were extremely dirty and filled with junk. I replaced plugs, got spark on all. The motor ran but would not stay running so I did the above maintance. Now it won't even start. The carbs seem to be flooding because fuel leaks out of them. Any suggestions on how to get it started and keep it running.

sir, i replied to the thread that you posted several days ago when you stated that it ran for awhile and then wouldn't even "crank" and i asked you about your Voltage supply from the battery...it sounds as though you must have worked pass the cranking issue. Have you ever heard the old saying...fuel, fire, air, and compression...well, thats the truth! Now, if the battery has ample voltage to crank the motor and your sure you have spark at all the plugs, then you have "fire", compression is probably questionable, unless you've taken a reading lately, it sounds as though you have plenty of fuel, and yes, these old carbs are gonna leak some fuel but two-stroke engines like gas! and we know you have air, but is the air intake through the carbs on start-up regulated properly? i ask this because im wondering about your choke position? are the choke or choke shutter plates closing so that when the motor is being cranked it creates the vaccum to pull gas into the cylinders? if you think its flooding then pump the carb bowls full of gas and then disconnect the fuel supply line from the gas tank...crank it till it either starts or runs out of gas trying to start...if it was flooded, when the bowls get low on gas then it should "lean out" the gas and presumably start...if it doesn't start with that method then put some gas from your tank into a squirt bottle and LISTEN CLOSELY...spray some gas from the squirt bottle into the carbs BEFORE cranking the motor, NEVER spray gas into the motor while cranking the motor, NEVER!!! AND DON'T "hang-out" in front of the motor with spray bottle in hand...just spray some gas into the carb throats and get rid of the spray bottle and crank it to see if it will attempt to fire...and i bet it does, if it has fire!!!

the gas in a spray bottle is better for your motor.. starting fluid burns stuff up. although i do use it sometimes :)

Go to the Engine FAQs Forum and do "Outboard won't start", Marksman.

Pretty much what monk-monk offers, but in a more structured procedure.

Starting fluid has no lubricant. Very dangerous for a 2 stroke.
