I bought this '78 16' sailfish earlier this summer. There are some works that needs to be done but I'm tackling one issue at a time. I like the boat and like to keep it. The first problem involves a loose drain plug. After reading some boat repair books, I believe the previous owner may have dropped her at the boat ramp as the boat sits on rollers. See photos. The problem that I have right now is two fold.

1. The boat keeps dripping water. From my reading the putty may need to come out. I'm still reading so this may have to wait because it looks like this is a big problem.

2. The loose drain plug. This past weekend, I may have tighten the drain plug a little too tight. This caused the drain hole to SPIN as I'm loosing the drain plug after a day of boating. I tried to apply 4200 but it didn't stick. The previous owner may have used 5200 or something else. I need recommendation on how to fix the loose drain hole?

Thanks in advance.

Get that plastic thing out of the transom and throw it away. Get one of these to replace it.

Make sure you get the right size to fit the hole. Hope like crazy your transom is not too wet or rotten to hold the screws. Clean all the old sealant off the surface. Clean it good with acetone and gently scuff the surface with sandpaper. Seal the flange with 5200 and use brass or stainless screws. If the dripping never stops you may be looking at wet transom problems. Good luck, keep us posted.
