allen screw on alpha one sterndrive

I can't see into the hole with the allen screw on alpha one sterndrive...does anyone know the size of it and if it's stripped how to get it out....drill?

Without going to the garage and looking at the tool, I think its a 3/8.
If you have to drill it, your going to need a bit large enough to take off the head of the bolt so the rest can fit through the hole, then remove it from the lower unit once you take it off.

i assume your talking about the cap screw that holds the trim tab on the lower. if so. i believe it's a 3/8" hex drive. i just went to the shed to measure my driver.

i like to pb blaster that cap screw prior to tangling with it. after a days soaking i just use a plain ol allen wrench with a large adj. wrench on it. it usually goes snap when it releases. be sure ya got full engagement of the driver with the cap screw too. so ya don't strip the drive of the cap screw..

if the drive of the screw is trash. i think i'd attack the trim tab itself with a grinder to make it go away, thus releasing that bolt for separation of the lower from the upper..

I'll pb it tonight and let er soak then try it tomorrow, If I grind the trim tab are we talking about grinding through and then replacing the trim tab? Would that be better than drilling the head off the screw?

Another ditto from me. I had to do the same thing years ago. The zinc cuts/ busts up pretty easily. And yes - then you buy another zinc.

Any marina or boat supply house will sell them - even the chain stores like West Marine.

I had to grind/break off the tab as well...The allen bolt was rusty/rounded and couldn't get her out the proper way.

The tab is right here on iboats as well for your purchasing pleasure.

Put the new tab on with some antisieze to prevent the dissimilar metal corrosion that siezes parts.

So far you got off easy. My bolt underneath the zinc was toast. I had to drill a stainless steel bolt housed in aluminum out. Actually pulled it off. Best of luck with your next bolt. Also I read your better off with marine grease for antisease.

Since the bolt goes into the trim tab why not just heat the tab to release the bolt?
