Allowable upper shift lever play

I'm reassembling my bell housing today, tomorrow, over the weekend...depending on how it goes.

The upper shift lever is pretty new. I replaced it a couple years ago when I rebuilt the bell housing for the first time (I'm having to redo it because I used Mallory bellows and Sierra trim senders :grumpy:).

I noticed a little bit of play between the upper shift lever and the shift shaft. How much is allowable? I also noticed that the shift shaft is slit vertically all the way down to the through hole, making me think I could close the gap with a vice grips.

Thoughts and ideas?

Thanks. Nate

Hi Nate, I think your talking about the play coming from the pin in the top of the gimbal. Your going to find play there and torqueing harder on the u-bolts won't reduce it. I have not found any instant in Merc manuals showing how much is allowable. If the upper portion of the pin is snug in the bushing and the play is coming from the square bottom portion of the pin, then I don't see an issue

No. I'm talking about the shift lever that attaches to the top of the shift shaft (not the steering lever)...the shift shaft that is in the bell housing. I think it is called the upper shift shaft if I'm not mistaken.

I've already squeezed the shaft in a vice and made the pin fit nice and snug, eliminating the play.

Thanks, though.

There should be NO movement between the lever and the shaft.... Did you also buy after-market when you replaced them?
