Almost a disaster?

Hello everyone, I?m still pretty new to boating and this forum but I have something I would like share. While at the lake this weekend I witnessed some very disturbing lack of common sense.
After my boys and I were ready to call it a day we headed back to the ramp but could not pull our boat out due to this boat full of people taking up both sides of the ramp. After about 15 minutes of watching them pull the boat in and out of the water and checking the bottom I docked my boat and asked them if they would please move so I could pull mine out. The owner said he would but asked me if I could show him how to operate his boat. I was confused by his question and asked him what he meant. He told me he had just bought this boat and he could not get it to go in gear. This explained why he had nine kids (not exaggerating I counted them) maybe two were over the age of twelve. In addition there were a total of three kind of big adults. This was only about a 16?ski boat. The disturbing part was none of these kids or adults had life jackets on. Two of theses kids were younger than two years old (just a guess). I explained to him that I was pretty sure he was overloaded and the kids under 13 were suppose to wear life jackets. He quickly told me everyone on board was a great swimmer (the toddlers also?). So at this point im just walking around the boat when I noticed the propeller had two blades missing and the third was pretty chipped up. The worst part was there was no plug in the bilge and when I asked him why he responded ?I thought it was suppose to fill up with water (the bilge) as it did not have a radiator?. I told him the best thing to do was for him to take the boat to a repair shop and come back with somebody experienced in boating. Can you believe he joined the no plug club on purpose?
Sorry it was such a long post.

Re: Almost a disaster?

this joker was trying to go boating with blades missing from his prop?!

i wounder if the previous owner told him it was ok.

i know that an adult should be able to make thier own decisions, but some people need supervision.

i also believe that a "good guy" would at least inquire as to what kind of boating experience the buyer has.......and maybe teach him a little.

this guy probably got ripped off by the sounds of his "new to him" boat.......considering he doesnt even know how to operate it.......................the sad part is he is endangering everyone in the boat and on the lake by going out with ,obviously, no clue how to even put it in gear.

imo the guy selling the boat to a complete novice should be held partly responsible if there were any accidents----thats like selling a gun to a kid who has never even owned a squirt or cap gun...............................for example: go to a motorcycle dealership and ask for the fastest motorcycle they have and see if they dont start asking what kind of experience you have riding bikes.

Re: Almost a disaster?

My first thought was you made up this story! But probably not!. I sold a 16 foot fiberglass open bow to a family member. Then I heard from a nephew what a dog the boat was-wouldn't even do more than about 10 mph with 9 full grown men on it!![and a couple coolers full of beer of course]
Water patrol let them off with a few warnings, because they were coming in off the river, and the only sober guy on the boat happened to be driving at the time.

I almost wish I had made it up. The inside of this boat was also in pretty poor shape so in my opinion he was definitely ripped off. He paid the same amount I paid for mine. Mine was in good working order when purchased. Also the guy showed me how to operate, load and off load. We spent a fair amount of time at the lake before any money switched hands.

Another reason for requiring a boat "operators license."

totally agree "Another reason for requiring a boat "operators license." before you can register a boat.

Missouri is slowly making it mandatory to have passed a boating safety course before operating any vessel in the state. Right now, it applies to those born after Jan 1, 1984. The safety identification card and photo ID must be carried onboard.

So it will take a while, before every operator is licensed.

Re: Almost a disaster?

Ya have to wonder what goes through some peoples minds. I would guess the when he got everyone in the vehicle there wasn't seat belts for everyone either. All the "stupid" people had to get to the water somehow!! It isn't just boaters. They live that way every day. I see the same stuff all the time at the lake. Really scares me to think about it. But then that is what the kids think is "right" when they grow up..(if they are lucky enough to grow up)

Re: Almost a disaster?

If you want to see stupid try Sylvan lake during the fireworks:eek:
Funny thing is the people that trailer the boat in to see them are mostly good boaters it is the people that keep their boat on the lake that cause the problems. O.K not all the trailer people are good and not all the lake people are bad those are just my observations. I have drawn the conclusion that most of the bad trailer people are scared off because of the traffic.
just observations and I may have drawn the wrong conclusion
