Ok Guys - I am pretty much finished with my rebuild - MANY THANKS to all of you who have given me very good pointers and walked me through!!!!!

Ok - I got everything hooked up tonight and turned the key......it actually started! (That surprised me a little).

BUT....I saw water pouring out from behind the lower cover where the lower unit meets the powerhead. I took off the cover and started again. Water is pouring out the hole just behind/below where the steering unit bolts into the lower unit. What's missing here because I don't think this is normal.

There was no water coming into where the powerhead sits/meets the lower unit inside the main motor cover.

Advice please.

Thanks,
SM

Re: Almost finished with rebuild - A little more help please!

Let's see if I am reading this right. The drive shaft runs in an isolated tube cast into the exhaust housing. Water that escapes the pump housing through the drive shaft hole is drained off through some holes in the exhaust housing. Otherwise, it would fill the chamber that the shaft runs in and overflow out the top end. You didn't plug any holes did you? Or is it possible that there is so much water flowing out the pump housing hole that it fills the drive shaft tube faster than it can drain out? Too much water pressure on the muffs? Problem with the impeller fitting the pump housing (height)?

Just trying to reason it out. Don't have the hard and fast answer.

FR - I do have a good bit of water pressure on that hose bib. Maybe that could be it?

I didn't do anything with the lower unit - only rebuilt the powerhead.

One other thing I just saw upon further inspection - At the very bottom where the bottom section of the lower unit bolts onto the rest of the shaft water is weeping out in the front. I guess ther may be a gasket there that must be replaced? I will probably replace the impeller while I am at it? Water is coming out the pee hole just fine though.
