almost have it but no quite

Ok hooked up the solenoid today fired it up and started right away turned the key off and the engine was still running pulled the battery cables off and the engine was still running then I pulled the main harness and engine was still running then pulled the coils in the spark plugs and finally quit does this mean something is wrong with my ignition switch or is it somethi g else

Most older motors with magneto or CDI ignitions will run just fine with no battery or harness hooked up. We need to know what motor you have to determine how to shut it down properly...

Well, if you had a charging system, you don't now. Should have pulled the choke or disconnected the fuel. Rectifier, if you have one is likely cooked.

Ignition sw was miswired or you have a wiring problem.
