I wish I would have found this board sooner. This is where I started long story short - rebuilt the carbs.

UPDATE.....

Cleaned the carbs and the motor fired right up.

Here is the problem. It will idle for about a minute or 2 then act like it wants to stall but it doesn't and the motor recovers and the process is repeated. Mind you now this is on the muffs. In the water it probably would have stalled.

Tried the Clymers carb adjustment. It called for lightly seated, then back out 2.75 turns. How do know if the screw is lightly seated? It seems pretty stiff.

Anyway the problem persisted after the Clymer carb adjustment. It wasn't in the water so that moght have affected it.

Another thing, the idle seems fast. I cant measure it but it seems to idle faster than the recommended 725-775 rpm Clymer recommends.

Should I mess with the "idle speed screw" before or after I adjust the carbs?

John, I have read your carb adjustment instructions. Am I the first or second set of instructions? Any other tips appreciated!

Thanks for your help!!!

that's why i hate Clymers, Johnson manual would tell you that screw is preset. not to mess with it. try the first section of these directions. lightly seated is you turn it in till it does not turn any more, without exerting major pressure.

The first paragraph of the carb adjustment procedures says:

"Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running."

In the first sentence - How do I set the rpms to where the motor will just stay running? Do I do this on the carburetor? Do I crank the motor and assume its already idling at its lowest?

How can you adjust one carb at a time? How do you know if the sounds from the motors and how its operating are based on your carb adjustment or the other carb which may be out of tune?

Also, how do you lower the idle?

Thanks Daddy!!

OK, perhaps all that's needed is a 'rewording' of the first sentence.....

"Start engine and lower the rpms using the twist grip throttle to where it just stays running....."
In the third sentence, "Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running."...again, lower the twist grip throttle to a low idle.....
