i have a 1999 17ft Proline center console, and I can turn the wheel almost 90deg before it engages,. I would like to replace the steering. I assume that the box just cant be replaced. So then the Box and cable will have to be. Its a Teleflex.

Has anyone replaced this at all and would the console have to come up. and the difficulty.

First I would look closely at all the attachment points. Try to see where the play actually is. I've replace several assembly's over the years, on different types of boats, Mostly because the cables get rusted and stiff. Never had to raise a counsel though. The Last one I did, just this week was pretty easy, tie a string to one end, removed the cable, and pull the new one through with the string. Sometimes people tie everything to the cable with zip ties, and then it turns in to a pain in the a**.
