Alpha 1 2 gen 2 shift cable adjustment

I have a 1998 well craft merc 5.7 2 barrel alpha 1 gen 2 ever since i got it it always stalled in reverse and coming out of Foward i need to adjust the cables i tried a few diff things i found on youtube but it only made it worse so i am starting from 100)% scratch What is the procedure to adjust both cables?

My video on shift cable adjustment is worth a look. If you still have problems, pull the drive (I've also done a video on that) and check the cable is moving properly all the way, and that the drive is fully selecting forward and reverse without binding up or any resistance.

Remove the lower shift cable from the bracket, grease thumb and index finger, grasp black plastic sleeve and try to move it FREELY all the way in and all the way out.
If you cant do this you need a new lower cable or the cable is misrouted or the interupter switch is not correctly set.

or the upper shift shaft is bent, or tight in the bell housing because of the leaking seal, or.....

lower shift cable was new last year thought that was the issue i dealt with stalling whole summer i would like to not have to start it every time i back out of the slip this year lol. i used your vid to adjust it today and it didnt come out right wouldn't go in foward was way off il try again tomorrow if not think i am just guna call a local mechanic to come adjust it or replace cable if needed tired of messing with it tbh lol
