I store my boat on a lift and dang near killed myself twice attempting to install the muffs hanging from the ladder. Everyone tells me there is no other method that using muffs on the alpha one (besides t'ing off to flush engine only) But I have heard of muffs with an extension handle that will allow me to reach down to install the muffs. Anyone know where I could find these OR any other alternative?

Thanks

Welcome to iboats! So, what are you trying to do? Flushing after use? Maintenance? If you need to run her, cant you lower the boat into the water? And if you are just flushing the engine, teeing into the cooling hoses is prolly the best option... since the drive drains itself. Let us know what you are trying to accomplish.

As stated above, the outDRIVE drains itself, when you tilt it down all the way. T-ing the the hoses to flush the engines is all you need to do.

Re: Alpha 1 ear muff alternative

OK...Let me see if I have this straight.

I have a Pro-Line 230 23' walkaround with a Mercruiser 5.7L (Chevy 350) with an SE106 (Same as Alpha 1) outdrive. With a closed cooling system.

What I am understanding here, is if I install this flushing attachment, I will accomplish EXACTLY what I want to do. I have seen this product before. Does the fact the outdrive does not get flushed of the saltwater damage the outdrive? I am very mechanically inclined and can install this system very easily. BUT I have been told by forums from the sterndrive manufacturer muffs are the only way to get a total flush of the system. This method will only flush the motor, NOT the outdrive. I do not want to cause any damage to the outdrive.

Again...will this system protect my engine AND the outdrive not have any buildup or impeller or pump problems ?

your in salt water, just that fact alone has corrosion starting. Even constantly keeping the zinc's clean may not be enough to keep corrosion at bay. a flush kit or muffs can only prolong the inevitable. with the mercruiser, depending on which system (full or half system) you have, you still will have corrosion. with a half system you still need to flush the exhaust manifolds which is what the flush kit does. It also pulses the water to help break up any deposits, which simply running on muffs doesnt do.

All I can tell you is that I installed one, it worked for my needs which was flushing after I pulled the boat out of water. I also installed one on a friends boat that spent its life moored in salt water, and I have talked with the owner of the company down at the miami boat show when he would stop by our booth.

your outdrive is on the cold side of the system, so you shouldnt have salt coming out of suspension like it does on the hot side of the system. above 130F, the salt tends to start to build up so buildup in your drive will be minimal. your also on a lift, so you dont have barnacle buildup.

I installed my hose connection in the bilge area under the swim platform close to the port gunwale so I could access from in the boat or outside the boat.

While I'm at it...what would be a good way to install a second hookup that I can hook a coiled wash down hose to for rinsing the inside of the boat. I could install it on the other side of the rear gunwale. It should receive water from the same source.

your going to have to plumb in a supply manifold then prior to the inlet port / check valve.
