I picked up a boat with twin alpha 1 g2 outdrives.
Boat was laid up over 10 years ago because of a sterndrive problem.
I havent had much time to play with it,i have determined a few things.
-Alpha 1 g2 outdrives,140 gm engines.
-1 outdrive was unbolted already, removed it to find shift cable was broken....hoping that was the initial problem.
-both motors were tight to roll over.
Soaking in aerokroil at the moment.
Looking through plug holes, all cylinders still show cross hatch hone pattern.
- oul in engines is clean, fresh.
Engine bay shows water stains upto bottom of the oul pan.
1 engine starter is sticking.
One thing i dont like s no good way to roll the engine over by hand.
So i have alotta work ahead of me.
The hourmeter on the dash shows 1200 hours.
Before i plan to sink any more time and money into this outdrive set......are they worth repairing, dependable?
I always avoided sterndrives, horror stories bout sinking boats....ect.
But alot of that comes down to maintence.
Ill discuss the boat in another thread, its an older boat that was updated with the alpha one g2 drives and motors.

Both the engines and drives are solid and reliable. As you said. it's down to maintenance.

Thanx
Guess ill start trying to get the engines running.
Im missing both ignition keys, hooked up 1 battery last night to see what had power and what didnt have power.
Nothing on my dash works, power strip under help shows 12.8 v .....nothing powers up.
Ill search around for wiring diagrams.
My key switch has 3 wires.
Ill try to figure out wiring soon and replace the switches.
Starter wires were off of the port engine, sparks as soon as i hook up battery.

To rotate those motors I put a socket on the alternator pulley nut and pressure on the belt.
Might as well remove both drives now as they will have to come off anyway.
That way if the the motor still will not turn you know it's the drive causing the problem.
Make sure the gear shift is in forward before pulling drive.

Thanks for the advise.
Ill definatly remove both drives while in foward.
Drives are comming off for mandatory seal n boot job anyway.
Maybe cleanup n paint.
It will be a few weeks before i have the boats papers in my hands anyway.
Wont be hitting the water anytime soon, this will be a long refurb process.
Thanx

Remove the key switches from the dash panel and you'll find a number on them. Go to Merc with those numbers and you get new keys... Number will be either a 3 digit number between 101 and 134 or a 2 character number starting with either 1 or 2 and a letter between A and F (see key chart, with part numbers, next post).... 3.0Wiringa.png

Ill id the key switches and see about ordering the keys.
My motors has the distribitorless firing system, would the wiring schematic be the same?

Thanx again.

I had high hopes of the port engine being in good running condition.
Last week i filled cylinders with aerokroil.
Tonight i ran compression test.
170
125
150
65

Those numbers tell me i have sticking rings or valve seat issues.
I could rule out the rings by putting thicker oil in each cylinder and check compression again.
But im guessing after 10 years or more not running will do that to rings.
So ill oil and re check, then probally work on firing her up for a few mins to see if rings break loose.
If it doesnt....then i guess pull heads to dig deeper.

Ok
I put about a spoon of 30 wt per cylinder
Im very pleased.
The weakest cylinder after 10 revolutions peaked out at 185 psi.
So from cyl 1-4 (4 was the weakest first test)

175
170
175
185

So theres hope.once rings broke loose, she now builds 170 plus in 4 revolutions.
After a few mins running everything should loosen up and settle in with closer psi numbers.
Ill research what the psi should be.

Might help to use an upper cylinder lube for a little while (high quality 2 stoke oil is a great upper cylinder lube, at about 150:1)... ;-)
