I changed the gear lube on my lower unit today. I got about 45-50 ounces in it. It was hard to tell when it was "full"? I filled it until the vent plug started to overflow, then about 12 more ounces after that. Since there is no way to check it on this lower unit does that sound about right?

Ayuh,... On an Alpha 1, ya pump in, til it runs out the top vent plug, then plug it up, she's Full.....

If yer talkin' Gen.IIs,...
The oil bottle oughta be pretty Full if ya pumped in another 12oz.s after puttin' the top plug back in....

Re: Alpha 1 Gear Lube

i'd think it'd depend on if ya got the gear lub monitor.
on my mc-1 (pre alpha if ya must). i put it level then fill till it starts to run out the fill hole. if i introduce any air due to a low bottle of new lube, i turn the drive shaft to hopefully purge the air bubbles. ya can see the lub inside the hole with a flashlight if ya look close, the last few pumps it's just starting to come of the vent hole, i quick put in the vent plug, then swap the pump the for the fill plug.
if ya got the monitor, i'd referance the oem service manual to find out the exact facts for filling proper.

On an Alpha to get 12 more oz. in I would think you would have blown it past the drive shaft seal and filled the drive bellows.

The way I read it, he pushed another 12oz AFTER it ran out the vent.
As Bond-O said, it's full when oil runs out the vent.
If it is a GenII, you'll fiqure it out real fast.
