1988 Alpha 1 Gen 1.

Apart from a few other things I am rebuilding the impeller pump upper and lower housings. The kit was delivered in a clear bag with no instructions. The manuals talk about a Centrifugal Slinger, which is in the kit, but it appears to just dit on top of the upper impeller housing.

Is this one of mercruisers bright idea's to seal the housing? What is it supposed to do?

Just keeps big chunks of debris out of the pump housing, it doesn't really seal anything. The impeller does the sealing.

Arrrrr, thought so, when I tightened the nuts down the shaft got stiffer to turn, makes sense.

Many thanks Don S

PS, do you ever use Perfect Seal on the upper housing gaskets?

Nope: You don't want it getting on the impeller. Besides, if it leaks with a new gasket, it's probably because the upper housing is warped.

At the risk of sounding stupid, how would you tell if the housing was leaking? I thought it was surrounded by water when the boat is in the water?

How could you test it?

Both covers seem to be warped on these aftermarket alpha gen 1 kits already when new.Ive seen it on sierra, glm etc.Never took the risk to put them on.

Oem is the way to go.But I actually had luck and found some unknown make(german made) rebuild kits that meets oem quality, same price as the cheap aftermarket stuff. But this is in europe so dunno about in the states.
