4th week trying to get boat in an 4th failure.

1) Controls went - New Controls
2) Trim Pump - Luckily bad ground but a PITA to diagnose
3) Running hot - replaced thermostat and impeller
4) Found lower oil seal in upper floating around.

Just got upper seal kit in the mail.

Manual says to use loctite 271. 2 questions

1) Am I going to have trouble getting this out? Will I have to heat it? Seems like an area i shouldn't heat (seals ect...) Its actually a 3 year old SEI 106 drive if that matters

2) Should I use loctite. I hate the stuff. Makes it impossible to remove.

Getting what out??????

2) Should I use loctite. I hate the stuff. Makes it impossible to remove.

It also prevents the seal from popping out easily............ Use it.

I need to replace the "lower oil seal" in the upper...where the drive shaft goes into the upper drive

Based on info from this site it looks I can pry it out with a screw driver but I am concerned about the thread locker that may be on it.

I was hoping someone has replaced this seal. Look slike a common problem.

It's not a common problem, and be very careful what you search for and read. There is also a lot of just plain wrong information given on forums. Nature of the beast ya know.
Here is a link to the OEM service manual http://www.4shared.com/document/zz_5pj9o/Service_Manual_06.html
Download it and find out the proper procedure for replacing the seal.

As DonS Stated there is a procedure to replace that seal. and it starts by disassembling the complete upper gearing to get to it and replace. Quite an indepth job and a couple special tools. Might want to consider paying a shop an hour or 2 labor to get it repaired. Then at least you can count on it being done by a knowledgeable mechanic (in most cases) in which the work is warrantable.

I realize that is an option. I have read the manual and reviewed the procedure thoroughly. Before I make that decision I am trying t find out whether anyone has personal experience replacing this seal without dissasembling the upper. It certainly looks like and I have read numerous times that it can be removed from the top. It is pressed in from that direction as well.

The SEI techs indicate it is done that way as well

I am trying to find out whether anyone has personal expereince replacing this seal without dissasembling the upper gears?

You can get away with it if you only replace the one seal, but if you want to replace both, the other one has to come out the other direction.

I did it two days ago. I did it from the bottom. The lip side (spring) faces up toward the sky. Mine was over molded in rubber so no need for lok tite. Pryed the old one out with a real tree bow hanger. Used the rubber coated end and pulled. Just tap it flush with the housing any further and it will pop in. Use a large socket turned backwards with a long extent ion that will avoid driving it too deep.

there's two seals there.. which one... 13 or 14? from your description it sounds like your referring to 13... that one ya gotta disassemble the whole upper to go get... 14 can be done from the bottom outside of the drive... the mc1 attachment i think has the seal locations circled.. the bottom middle one is the one from the outside, the one above it is the one ya gotta do full disassembly to go get..

You could have gotten just that one seal and not the whole kit. I replaced #14 last year and just picked up that one from the mercruiser dealer.
