I had my out drive replaced about a month ago and the guy told me the shift cable was stretched and needed to be changed. Well the cable went a week ago and i am now looking to replace it. I am mechanically inclined and work on cars regularly and thought about tackling the project myself. I am wondering how easy it is? Whats the procedure? What are some tips and tricks to replacing it? or is this something i should just pay someone to have done. When i talked to him he said he could replace it for 200 dollars but he is busy until the end of the month and i would like to be enjoying it sooner rather than later.

I would appreciate any help on this!
Thanks!!

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... If changin' a tire is a 1, 'n swappin' the motor in a Lexus is a 10, it's maybe a 3,....

Go for the Oem, Mercruiser shift cable kit, it's well worth it, don't buy aftermarket,....

A 1/2" allen key can be used, rather than the special 12 point driver bit from Merc, to pull the pins, to remove the gimbel housin',....

Toss the little metal clip used on the small end of the bellows, 'n use 2 zip-ties goin' opposite directions for a full seal, 'n don't pull 'em too tight,...

In my signature, click on Don'S Adults Only Section,....
All the info ya need is in there, 'n Alot more for future reference,...

I also like Boat Dr.'s trick, usin' weed wacker line attached to the ole cable, to pull the new cable through,....

Where is a good place to get OEM mercruiser parts? I have changed motors before so a 3 doesn't seem bad in my book. And if the only special tool is a 1/2'' allen key then i think this is something i can tackle.

a control cable solid core or weed whacker line. May not need to remove the housing IF you can get the cable to lay somewhat straight to install it without kinking it. Check your messages
