I recently replaced the water pump in my Alpha 1 Gen 1 drive. Everything went back together just fine, but I noticed that when shifting to reverse it didn't see to be fully engaged. Forward is fine and engages solid. I adjusted the shift cable and got it better, but now I am worried something isn't right. I ran it in the driveway and it shifts into forward and reverse ok, but there is also no load on it then. Is there something that would cause this from the reassembly? I can adjust the shift cable enough to get revers nice and solid, but then forward has the issue. Instead of it locking hard, if you push on it, it will jump. Its like there isn't enough swing to get both to engage fully.

You can try adjusting by using achris's videos in the adults only section, but my guess is you need a new lower shift cable

Definitely sounds like a stretched lower shift cable to me. Time for replacement.
