When I put my boat into gear there is usually a bit of a clonk / crunch when it goes in, I guess as the propellor is stationary and then suddenly has to start turning at idle speed.

As far as I can remember, its always done it but I was just wondering if its normal.

Yes there is a "thump" but 2 things you want to check so you know your not causing damage.

1. check your idle rpms... you should be about 650 in gear, if your any higher than that you need to turn the idle down.

2. you want to shift in 1 quick smooth motion. You don't want to slowly push the throttle until it catches... all that does is cause the clutch to skip teeth.

Thanks Guys, reassuring to hear.

I do put the lever into gear smoothly and positively to avoid grinding of the dog clutch but Ill check the idle rpms again, they might have crept up a little bit.

JustJason, I cant read the small print caption on your avatar of the yacht on its side. What does it say?

just because you can afford one, doesn't mean you are smart enough to operate it
