I was preparing my boat to go back into the water yesterday and shoved some grease into all three grease points on the outdrive. Grease went into the 2 points where the drive tilts no problem and began oozing out thus indicating that the joints were full of fresh grease but I pumped loads into the grease nipple which is at the 4 o clock position on the bell housing without seeing any grease coming out anywhere.

Whese does the grease go to that is injected via this particular point?

Went into the gimbal bearing. You should probably pull the drive and clean up the mess if you pumped that much grease into it.

While you have the drive off, check the alignment and lube the coupler splines and ujoints.

Might head up to the Adults only sticky at the top of the forum and download the OEM service manuals for your engine and drive and do some reading before you mess something up.

Don,

Many thanks for the reply.

I didn't pump that much grease in, maybe 15 - 20 ccs so hopefully no problems.

Didnt have chance to pull the drive this winter. Its a job I want to do to replace the bellows, check alignment, lubricate the coupler splines and u/j etc but its been postponed to next winter now.

best regards,

unless you have an issue with what you didn't check. then it'll be a summer problem/project..

your obviously thinking in terms of pm since you had your grease gun out. why not continue? ya know if yer bellows leaks, ya can rust up your ujoints, and ruin your yoke and gimble brg. or worse yet. sink your boat... other consequences could occur too. just food for thought...

No, I have no reason to think that anything is amiss, but the bellows have been on there a while now. Ive had a look at them though and they do look in OK condition, no cracking or chafing etc.

I just think it will do no harm to pull the drive off and inspect / re lube everything and replace the bellows for peace of mind. That said, I didn't get round to it this winter so it'll have to wait till next time.

Im aware that, if the bellows leak, then water in the mechanicals is a bad thing and that it can sink the boat, but its a risk Im going to have to take.
