Hello!
I have a Alpha one Gen II standard rotation drive. I am in the process of doing and overhaul.I want to check my tolerance before and as always after the overhaul.

What I would like to do is check the backlash between the pinion and reverse gear - its unclear in my manual if I need to pull the carrier first. Does anyone know How this is done??

Thanks!
pete

If you pull the carrier, there's nothing to support the reverse gear. If I remember correctly, there is no need to check that backlash. Reverse is used so little and has so much less of a load on it than the forward gear that they gave it enough tolerance when machining the housing to make it unnecessary. That wouldn't be the case with a counterrotation drive, but those are covered in a different section of the factory manual.

Willy...

thanks for your reply and I have heard that is the case with this drive. However I would like to check it for my records. Would you know how its done and what tool is needed? I have purchased many of the special tools and would just like to do this for my own piece of mind.

Thanks!
pete

I would assume that the procedure would be similar to checking the forward backlash, but instead of putting pressure on the propshaft, you'd have to put some pull on it. But it's kinda pointless. There are no shims available to adjust it.
