On the upper seal I think the brass bushing is on the top then the 2 oil seals are on the bottom twards the exhaust chamber. BUT........my logic is telling me the rubber seals should be on the top furthest away from water (I think the exhaust bellow will be wet?)

The manual shows the seals below the bushing, but does not orienate it as to top and bottom.

The bronze sleeve with the seals is pressed in from the bottom: if you tried to press it in from the top, your shift shaft would not fit properly. If your question really is- does the seal itself go on the upper part of the shaft, and the plain sleeve go on the bottom, then you are correct. Yes, the exhaust passage will be wet with the drive in the water.

Re: Alpha 1 gen 2 shift shaft seals

i installed mine with brass bushing on top and both seals (lip up) lip referring to stainless spring side up. This is on a 1999 alpha 1 gen 2 drive, no water intrusion to shift shaft mechanism to date so I feel I installed correctly. Hope this helps as I will be following this thread in case I need to be corrected by a true merc tech.
