The bellows expander you mention is mainly used on the exaust bellows when connecting the end to the gimbal housing. the main bellows boot dosent require help. The tool to install the ring is needed or some type of driver to install it without bending or damaging it.

I put the driveshaft bellows sleeve in place without the tool with no problems. Just lube it with powertune and push the sleeve in place, hold it there until the powertune dries and you're good to go. The bellows expander for the exhaust bellows is quite helpful though. However, if you go with the exhaust tube, the expander isn't needed.

If that ring seated with just a little lube, you got real lucky. It is almost impossible to get it to seat without even pressure all the way around.

Do a search on here and you'll see that Don even suggests that it can be easily done without the tool. Lube with powertune and push it in. Work it in evenly and it'll seat...no problems.

Not just any ole lube will work. PowerTuner evaporates completely in about 15 seconds then the ring will stay in. I have put them in by hand many times, when using OEM bellows. But found it impossible with after market bellows. They just arent the same.
