alpha 1 gen 2 water pump rebuild dumb question

Alpha 1 gen 2 impeller replacement

just bought the kit to replace impeller and seal did not come with a new key should I replace the key or is this not necessary

if the key is in good condition and not corroded, use it

ok here goes have an mercruiser alpha I gen 2 I put the water pump, impeller seal all in there is a round black seal that after you finish you slip over the shaft and it sits on top of the water pump housing. this round seal is shape like almost a mushroom...does it just sit on top of the housing or does it have to fit snug into the housing

Wait for others to chime in, but when I did mine it sat on top of the housing. But this was ina outboard, so I'm not sure of it'd be different.

It sits on top, above the housing. Usually there's an installer 'tool' that comes with the kits, it sets the height a teensy bit above the housing for that slinger seal.
