Alpha 1/Gen II tilt/trim oil questions

Boat is a 1991 SeaRay with a 3.0l mercruiser and an Alpha 1 outdrive. I believe the outdrive is a Gen. 2.

Stbd. trim hose (the short one on the outside) sprung a leak and it squirts out a small amount of oil when operated. So I'm changing the line. Easy enough.

I tried searching but there seems to be no posts dealing with what to do after this though. So...

1) I'm assuming I'll need to bleed the system of contaminated fluid since water most likely seeped in. Even if just a little. What is the best way to do this? Is is similar to "pumping brakes" and "bleeding brakes" on a car?

2) What kind of "oil" do I need to use?

1),.... Nope,.... Just cycle it Up,+ Down several tmes.....

2),.... If it's Red,..... It's ATF......
If it's Brown,...... It's Engine Oil.....

Either can be used......

By "cycle it up and down a few times" you mean to bleed the system? My main concern is flushing out the water in the system. Should I crack a line somewhere and then "cycle it up and down a few times"? Where?

I am guessing with the Florida location it is saltwater i would change all 4 lines as mine were all ready to fail


I had the same thing happen, i pulled out the pump and removed the rams so they could be fully moved buy hand to get ALL the oil/water mess out

same thing with the pump pulled the tank so i could wash it out in a safety clean tank


If thats is a bit much for you than you can remove the lines from the rams and keep pumping new oil through it into a container until it looks clean BUT there will still be some in the rams
